OT assesses and treats deficits in the patient’s physical capacity (primarily focused on the upper extremity) as well as their sensory, cognitive, and perceptual capacities. We address the total picture by educating family and caregivers, and making recommendations to increase the safety and accessibility of the home.

Therapists strive to stay current in advances in therapy, provide a welcoming environment, and help their patients acieve their goals in a timely manner and with the best quality of care.

Occupational therapy (OT) seeks to enable individuals to participate in their daily activities to their fullest potential. The word “occupation” in the name applies to the various tasks that make up day-to-day lives. This includes:
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) – eating, bathing, dressing, using the restroom, etc.
- Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) – caring for pets/family members, driving/community mobility, financial management, meal prep, home management, shopping, etc.
- Health Management – medication management, physical activity, nutrition management, etc.
- Rest and Sleep – sleep preparation and sleep participation
- Education – formal/informal educational participation
- Work – employment seeking/acquisition, job performance/maintenance, retirement preparation/adjustment, volunteer exploration/participation
- Play – play exploration/participation
- Leisure – leisure exploration/participation
- Social Participation – community participation, family participation, friendships, intimate partner relationships
Occupational Therapists take a holistic approach to assessing patient’s abilities to participate in the above activities, including physical strengths/barriers, cognition, psychosocial factors, habits/routines, beliefs, roles, and the environments in which activities occur. Through a collaborative and therapeutic relationship, OTs address deficits in these areas to improve independence and participation in daily activities to maximize quality of life.
Appropriate referrals include, but are not limited to:
- Weakness
- Upper extremity musculoskeletal conditions
- Arthritis
- Neurological conditions
- Pediatrics
- Cognitive decline
- Home safety
- Driving assessments/safety
